Social enterprise aims to help more coastal communities in Africa and Asia become micro-entrepreneurs, supplying blockchain-traceable “social plastic” for recycling to global brands.  

David Katz is the Canadian co-founder, president and CEO of Plastic Bank, a-first-of-a-kind social enterprise startup that monetizes plastic waste collection for some of the world’s poorest communities. Katz was inspired by a university seminar about recycling plastic waste in 2013 and founded Plastic Bank with CTO and brand strategist Shaun Frankson in Vancouver.In 2019, he became a fellow for the Unreasonable Group’s Impact Hub in Vancouver, an organization that supports social and environmental entrepreneurship. In 2011, he also founded Vancouver’s Core Values Institute, a consulting and global thought leadership platform for entrepreneurs.In 2014, he was also president of Vancouver’s chapter of the Entrepreneurs Organization for one year. He was named Global Citizen of the Year in 2014 by the international organization that has a network of over 10,000 business owners in 131 chapters across 40 countries. He also won the 2017 UN Lighthouse award for Planetary Health and Plastic Bank received the Paris COP21 Climate Conference Sustania Community Award in 2015.Katz completed a diploma in Hospitality Administration & Management at the British Columbia Institute of Technology in 1991 and started his own business in 1992 as founder and CEO of Nero Alarms. From 2005 to 2014, Katz worked full-time as the founder and president of Nero Global Tracking, a SaaS platform created to monitor the operations of mobile service vehicles. Nero SaaS is used in many Canadian cities and by the nation’s Defence Ministry. The company is now part of Vecima Networks Inc.

Sky Ocean Ventures is a £25m impact investment fund and part of the Sky Media Group. Since 2008, after completing a business course at Royal Roads University in Canada, Shaun Frankson has been running his own consultancy Frankson Media in Vancouver.From 2009 to 2014, Frankson worked as VP at Nero Global Tracking, a SaaS platform for mobile vehicles founded by David Katz. In 2013, the duo co-founded Plastic Bank in 2013 to launch a “Social Plastic” movement to reduce ocean plastic and set up recycling centers to create jobs to improve the livelihood of locals in under-served coastal villages. The Canadian co-founder is now the CTO of Plastic Bank. In 2014, he also became an advisor at HeroX, a social network for innovation with over 2m members.

Eurovending is a family-run, Italian business in the automatic vending sector based in Trento. To date, it has only invested  in one tech startup, the Spanish vending machine hardware and interactive payment app Orain, leading its €1m seed investment round in 2017. The company is a producer of plastic cups and also rents and services automatic vending machines across Italy and Spain.

This led her to found cosmetic surgery marketplace Yuemei. She is an economics graduate from Beijing Normal University and holds an MBA from the National University of Singapore.

The Gassó family is a Spanish entreprenurial family known for its GAES auditive solutions and centers for the hearing-impaired, in existence since 1949. Though the family has many charitable interests, it had not disclosed any investments in tech startups until leading the 2019 seed round of biotech startup VEnvirotech, which produces bioplastics from corporates’ organic waste.
